Warwickshire Safety News

Safety has had many changes this year - particularly as the exam has now achieved QCA status, which is a great move
forward. All the county examiners have attended a QCA update to ensure their marking process is up to date and in line
with the levels required. Although the paperwork is now adding at least 2 hours to the examiners time away from the test,
it does ensure that decisions are backed up by a clearly written syllabus. The optimum number of people a test can be
carried out for is 8.
9 exams have been carried out in Warwickshire this year, with over 85% of candidates being successful.
We need to establish some training & test centres in the north of Warwickshire – with and without horses available to use
by attendees. New venues need to risk assessed, at a cost of approximately £40 although we may launch a scheme
whereby a number of venues could have their risk assessment cost paid by the Committee. Becoming a recognised
centre is a revenue generating opportunity for the owner.
With only four people available to examine in Warwickshire – we really need to increase our pool of examiners and
trainers.
• Fran Penn or Nikki Inglis are happy to advise anyone who is interested in becoming a trainer, examiner or recognised
centre.

In today’s society, the need to get from A to B quickly is very dominant. This results in busier roads and a higher volume of fast traffic on previously “quiet country roads”.  Add to this a higher proportion of drivers in rural areas who are not used to the rural way of life and the profile of “safety” becomes very high.

Warwickshire fully supports the need to educate both drivers and riders in order to make riding on our roads safer. Our main tool is the Riding and Road Safety Test and the training required to pass the Test. We run tests regularly at various venues in the County – Warwickshire College, Rookery Farm, Ettington, Seecham Equestrian Centre, Tamrin Farm, Warwick and Bubbenhall Bridge, Leamington Spa.

To organise a test, we need to have:
· a minimum of 8 candidates

· a suitable venue which has a safe area for a simulated route e.g. a paddock or school, an area to do the theory paper and a suitable road route

· the venue risk assessed

If you are interested in either taking the Riding & Road Safety Test or want us to organise a test at your venue, please contact either Fran Penn, County Safety Representative on 07792649450 or Nikki Inglis, Committee Member and Examiner on 07815157871. Alternatively, contact the Safety Office at the BHS on 01926 707700. If you do not have access to a horse, some of the centres running tests will be able to provide one.

Stop press:  New examination centres - especially north of Coventry - are needed! If you think you may have a suitable venue, please contact Fran or Nikki as above.
