I have worked with horses all my life, holding the first BHSAI qualification in Scotland in 1947. I competed in Scottish and English showjumping circuits for fun in the 50’s to 70’s. The best achievements were being a finalist in the Foxhunter at Wembley and my biggest thrill was winning a grade C competition in the big ring at Hickstead. I am without a horse at the moment (temporarily, I hope) but the genes continue; my late son was Ewen Macrae and my daughter and granddaughter are both keen horsewomen. |

I first sat on a pony when I was about eight but didn't have proper riding lessons until I was 10. We couldn't afford a pony when I was a kid, but I worked at our local riding school in return for rides and learnt a lot riding other people's horses. I finally bought Cracker, my 14.2 chestnut mare as an unbroken three year old from an auction five and a half years ago. She's a real...a-hem....character, but lots of fun |

I am pictured to the right with Victor who a new member of our family. I have had him so that I don't get left behind at the yard at the weekend. It's been three years since I last had a horse. So very excited about riding with my wife and daughter again. Unfortunately I broke two ribs last week so i will have to wait awhile before getting in the saddle.(Not riding a horse, just a tractor) You can see my daughters horse in the back ground. |

Horses have always been a passion of mine, but growing up in Birmingham made it all seem like a dream! My family moved to Worcestershire when I was 10 and my bargaining part of the deal was that I would be allowed riding lessons when we moved. I skipped the lessons and found a small yard around the corner from where I lived who were happy to teach me in return for me mucking out, muck clearing in the fields and generally helping out. What a steep learning curve! I loved every minute, each weekend, and any day off from school I spent there and was lucky enough to learn to ride on a fantastic pony, who certainly taught me how to respect mares!!
My parents made a deal with me; if I could make it through the winter with the mare on loan then they would look into getting me my own horse. Well needless to say I did a whole winter and loved it. Not long after a lovely mare came up for loan and then later for sale, this was to be my first own horse Maggie, a beautiful Connemara who I had for 10 brilliant years.
We did hacking, local shows, dressage and even a pony club camp!! My real passion is Dressage, I love nothing better than practising dressage moves, on a summers evening in the field. I’m certainly not an adrenaline junkie and jumping definitely is not for me! I am now the owner of a 16.2 Chestnut mare Asti.
At the moment we are happy hackers with a bit of schooling thrown in but my aim for this year is to do our first dressage test!
As for my role on the BHS Committee, I am the Treasurer I am responsible for keeping a track of the accounts and making sure that all of the venues and people are paid to enable us to keep running all the brilliant events we hold each year. Being the treasurer enables me to put something back into a hard working charity.

The thorn amongst the Roses on the committee. My childhood was relatively free of horses, occasional jaunts to a local riding stable just outside Hereford was all. Instead of pony club camps it was cub and scout camps for me. University saw my introduction to breeches and stocks, although nothing to do with horses. It was part of the uniform for chasing around after a pack of beagles in the Kent countryside. After three years I emerged with a degree in agriculture and returned to Hereford. |
