Worcestershire Newsletter Spring 2010

Welcome to our spring newsletter. This will be the last paper version of the newsletter that will be posted out to all 1300 members. The newsletter will still be produced twice a year and still available in a variety of formats (see enclosed flyer). As a committee we know that BHS members join the Society for a variety of reasons ,whether it is for insurance , training or to receive British Horse and our newsletters! We hope that we will not lose touch with members as we have accrued a good base of local riders who enjoy our events .We hope to continue to offer a mixture of education and fun for people to enjoy . The money saved on 1300 stamps, printing and envelopes will go into supporting the work of the BHS locally. Please get in touch if you would still like a postal version, alternatively explore the electronic age with the West Midlands website (www.bhswm.org.uk) or our Facebook page.

Events Round Up 2009

Adult Gymkhana

My horse Bailey and I attended the adult gymkhana with some trepidation, as having not
experienced this type of activity before, so I was unsure what was in store for us. The event was extremely well attended and having successfully completed the session you could see why! It was absolutely brilliant, such fun and completely different to anything we had undertaken before.
The session was run by Lou Thomas. Lou has trained mounted games teams for many years. Her instructions were very clear and she was ably assisted by Kay and Ashleigh Robbins, mother and daughter combination who are no strangers to mounted games.
We took part in approximately six games which consisted of dropping things into buckets, picking things up, getting off and back on again, walking, trotting and cantering and a host of other manoeuvres.
My team was excellent and we ended up winning our session!! I was extremely surprised that my 16.2 spooky thoroughbred would turn his hand so successfully to mounted games, but he did and I am thinking we may have found our new forte!!
I would definitely recommend the adult gymkhana to anyone and will definitely be taking part again, should another event be organised.

Autumn Fashion Show

The Autumn Fashion Show 2009 on November 3, as always ,was very well attended.
More models with more outfits than ever, paraded for all to see. Julian still remains the only man for the job it seems but if there are any men out there who can compete with Julian on the catwalk please get in touch.
With entry fees, raffle and the auction we managed to raise £350 for the “Society for the Welfare of Horses and Ponies” and the same amount for local charity “Action Heart” .Both organisations were very appreciative.
This year we have decided to give the Spring Fashion Show a miss and concentrate all of our efforts on a bonanza in the Autumn. We aim to hold it early November at the Kingfisher. Information will be in the Autumn Newsletter –Start saving now.

Equine First Aid 10 & 14 October 2009

Many people enjoyed first class instruction on a variety of equine ailments and injuries in the sunshine at Hole Farm. For many, it was their first opportunity to practise bandaging of those awkward parts of the horses anatomy whilst keeping a dressing in place over the "wound".
For others, it was an excellent refresher and a chance to refresh skills learned many moons ago, under the expert eye of our instructors. Our equine assistants demonstrated extreme patience as each leg and joint was bandaged and unbandaged too!
The practical session was followed up by a more intense theory session, accompanied by some excellent notes. Many questions were asked and the discussion flowed, before presentation of certificates.
This event was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Many skills were learned, and,no doubt many of our own equines are now enduring our continued practising of techniques which one day might prove to be invaluable.
