Training and Examinations

BHS Examinations are internationally recognised qualifications.
There are a number of BHS examinations and qualifications you could work for depending upon whether you have professional or recreational aspirations.

BHS Stage Examinations are vocational exams designed for and aimed at, persons wishing to either pursue teaching as a career or who simply wish to explore the extent of their equestrian knowledge. The Stage 1 examination is the first qualification a candidate can achieve and the depth of knowledge and riding requirements progressively increases up to Stage 4. There are also Teaching qualifications that can be taken.Higher Level BHS qualifications are also available.

NVQs and SVQs are another form of qualification offered through the BHS. These qualifications are completely different from obtaining a BHS exam, which you apply to take on a specific date and on the day you either pass or fail. With NVQs and SVQs you are assessed on a continuous basis whilst at your place of work.

The Horse Owners Certificates: The Horse Owners Certificate is offered to all persons who are interested in expanding their knowledge of horse care and management. The Horse Owners Certificate is offered at four levels and achieved through a short course and written paper.

The Training Department: BHS Training works in conjunction with the Examinations Department. BHS Training provides conventions for Registered Instructors specialist Equine Specific First Aid courses and training days for BHS exams.

BHS Qualifications! – We need your Support! – Please complete our Questionnaire

The BHS is currently transferring its current qualification provision from the National Qualifications Framework to the emerging Qualifications and Credit Framework.

We need your support so we can lobby the funding councils and the sector skills councils to ensure that our qualifications continue to retain the rightful recognition and funding they deserve.  If funding is no longer available this could have a detrimental affect on our industry’s up and coming workforce.  However, the new framework will also provide an opportunity to develop a more flexible exam system.

So PLEASE go to the questionnaire on our web site at www.bhs.org.uk and click on the Training and Qualifications tab at the top of the home page.  You will then be able to click on a link which will take you to the questionnaire, where you can download it, complete it, save it and send an email to supportbhsquals@bhs.org.uk  It won’t take long to fill in.  If you don’t want to answer a question, then just leave it blank.

Or print it off and post to the Examinations Office (EQL) c/o The British Horse Society, Stoneleigh Deer Park, Kenilworth, Warwickshire  CV8 2XZ

Or send an email to supportbhsquals@bhs.org.uk and ask us to send a hard copy to you with a pre paid envelope – it won’t cost you anything!  Please encourage others to complete the questionnaire.  Place a copy of this letter in your local riding school, tack shop or other appropriate venue.  We can send you extra copies of the questionnaire if you would like us to.

By completing the questionnaire you will be a) supporting the future funding of BHS qualifications and b) contributing to the construction of BHS qualifications in the future.

Thank you for your support!
