I have been involved with horses since the age of nine. I am extremely lucky to have always had a very supportive family who back me in everything I choose to do. My two lads have grown out of ponies and have progressed onto the rugby field instead. All is not lost though as my partner, who also has two children, has a daughter who has been bitten by the horse bug. She is my constant companion on those short bleak winter days and long lazy days of summer when equines always come first. Read Beverly's full profile

I've ridden regularly since I was 7 years old, in 1998, I took my horse on a bridleway riding holiday with Bridle Rides and, when the opportunity came up at the end of the following year to buy the business, I sank all my savings into it. I had a lot to learn about their day-to-day care and I can thoroughly recommend the BHS Horse Owners Certificates, which I studied in stages right up to Level 4.  My business is obviously all about bridleways and I had to learn the basics of bridleway law and develop relationships with BHS Access Officers and County Rights of Way teams all over England and Wales from Day One in January 2000.

I've been interested in history and antiques, and have been collecting old maps of Worcestershire for about 20 years, so volunteering to join the BHS Committee in 2003 to help the then County Access and Bridleways Officer by keeping an eye on the bridleways near my home in North East Worcestershire seemed a fairly obvious thing to do.  I took over as CABO in the summer of 2006 and am committed to doing what I can to help local riders Although my knowledge of path user's rights and responsibilities is good after 7 years of running it, I still have a lot to learn about the Lost Ways project and claiming new bridleways based on historical and user evidence.

Having retired in 2007 as a police inspector with the West Midlands Police I now have more time to spend doing the things I enjoy, which are almost entirely concerned with horses!    Fortunately I have an understanding and supportive husband to help me.
The Role of the Welfare Officer – “Prevention through Education”
Welfare officers are practical people with a wealth of horse experience.  The aim  is to ensure the welfare of the horse, especially as many cases result from ignorance rather than deliberate cruelty.
